EXPERIENCES IN RUSSIA

Theatre, museums, food, shopping, nightlife & local experiences

Russia is a country to explore as much as to see. You can spend an evening watching ballet at the Bolshoi or Mariinsky, discover Russian art at the Tretyakov Gallery or the Russian Museum, try regional dishes in a neighbourhood restaurant, browse independent shops and markets, or explore a city with a local guide.
The most interesting experiences are not always the most famous ones. Moscow and St Petersburg have world-class cultural institutions, but smaller museums, contemporary art spaces, food markets, neighbourhood cafés and specialist tours can give you a much more personal view of Russia.
This guide will help you decide what is worth doing, where to look for events and tickets, and what to know before you go.

Theatre, Concerts & Cultural Events in Russia

For many visitors, a Russian theatre performance is more than an evening of entertainment. Theatres themselves can be historic landmarks, and attending a ballet, opera or concert gives you a chance to experience an important part of Russian cultural life.

Which theatres are worth considering?

The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow is the obvious choice if you want the classic Moscow experience: ballet, opera and one of the world's best-known theatre buildings. If the Historic Stage is sold out, check the New Stage as well.
The Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg is the equivalent must-see institution, particularly for ballet and opera. The Mariinsky complex includes the historic theatre as well as Mariinsky II and the Concert Hall, so check the exact venue when booking.
Other theatres worth considering include Vakhtangov Theatre, Sovremennik and Lenkom in Moscow, and Alexandrinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.

Ballet and opera are the easiest choice if you don't speak Russian

If you are worried about the language barrier, ballet, opera and classical concerts are usually safer choices than a drama or comedy performed entirely in Russian.
For a spoken play, check whether subtitles are available. Don't assume that an English-language performance will be available simply because the theatre is popular with tourists.

How to find what's on and where to buy tickets?

Yandex Afisha is one of the easiest ways to see what is happening in a particular city. Its theatre section lets you browse by date and venue, and tickets can be purchased for many events through the platform.
Some venues sell tickets only through their own website or authorised sellers.
Online purchase is usually possible only with a Russian bank card. Feel free to contact us for the assistance with any online purchases and reservations. Sometimes it is possible to pay with cash at the ticket office of the venue.
It is highly recommended to purchase tickets for the most popular shows and events well in advance. Tickets to the Bolshoi Theatre are often sold out 2-3 months before the performance.

What should you wear?

Most theatres do not require formal evening dress. Smart-casual clothing is normally sufficient. However, going to the Bolshoi, Mariinsky or another historic theatre is a good opportunity to dress up a little.

Museums & Exhibitions in Russia

Russia's museums range from enormous collections covering centuries of art and history to tiny specialist museums dedicated to subjects you may never have thought about.
The trick is not to visit every famous museum. Choose according to your interests.

The major museums

If you want to understand Russian art, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is one of the best places to start. The historic building in Lavrushinsky Lane focuses on Russian art, while the New Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val is particularly useful for 20th-century and modern Russian art.
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow is a particularly good choice if you are more interested in European and world art than specifically Russian art.
The State Hermitage Museum is an obvious choice for a first visit to St Petersburg. Allow considerably more time than you might initially expect: the complex is enormous, and trying to see everything in a couple of hours can turn the visit into an endurance test.
For Russian art specifically, don't overlook the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Its collection is spread across several historic buildings.

Don't overlook smaller and contemporary museums

Some of the most interesting cultural experiences may be outside the traditional “top 10 attractions” lists.
For contemporary art in Moscow, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is worth considering. It combines exhibitions with film screenings, lectures, performances, and workshops.
Among other interesting niche museums, you can consider Museum of Cosmonautics and Kuskovo Estate in Moscow; Faberge Museum, Russian Railway Museum and Dostoevsky Museum in St. Petersburg.

Language

Many major museums provide at least some information in English, and some offer English-language audio guides or tours. Smaller museums may operate almost entirely in Russian.

Eating Out in Russia

Food is one of the easiest ways to experience the diversity of Russia. Depending on where you travel, you may encounter very different dishes and culinary traditions.

Classic Russian dishes and foods include:
  • Pelmeni — small dumplings traditionally filled with minced meat, usually served with sour cream.
  • Beef Stroganoff — tender strips of beef cooked in a rich, creamy sauce, traditionally served with potatoes, rice, pasta or buckwheat.
  • Blini — thin Russian pancakes that can be served with sweet toppings or savoury fillings such as sour cream, fish, caviar or mushrooms.
  • Pirozhki — small baked or fried pastries filled with ingredients such as meat, cabbage, potato, mushrooms, or fruit.
  • Borscht — a hearty beetroot-based soup, usually made with vegetables and often meat, and commonly served with sour cream.
  • Solyanka — a rich, tangy and salty soup traditionally made with meat, fish or mushrooms, vegetables and pickled ingredients.
  • Olivier salad — a popular Russian festive salad made with potatoes, carrots, peas, eggs, pickles and mayonnaise, traditionally with meat or another protein.

Cafes & restaurants

Russian cities offer a wide range of places to eat, from inexpensive cafés and bakeries to casual restaurants and high-end establishments.
Menus are commonly available in Russian, although many restaurants in major tourist destinations also provide English menus.
In restaurants, you will normally be served at your table. In cafés and fast-casual establishments, ordering and payment procedures can vary.
Card payments are widely used in Russia, but international bank cards issued outside Russia generally cannot be relied upon. Foreign visitors can rely on cash or open a local bank account.

Tipping

Tipping is not legally required in Russia, but leaving a tip for good service in a restaurant is common.
Around 10% is a reasonable general guideline, although the amount depends on the quality and type of service. In cafés and more casual establishments, tipping may be less common or entirely optional.

Shopping in Russia

Shopping can be another way to discover Russia, particularly if you are looking for local food, crafts, books, souvenirs or products from Russian brands.

What to buy

Depending on your interests, consider:
  • Traditional crafts and souvenirs, such as Matryoshka dolls, Gzhel ceramics, Palekh laquer miniatures, and Khokholoma wooden crafts.
  • Food and drink, such as Pastila sweets, honey and berry jams.
  • Russian books and illustrated editions, especially by Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, and Mikhail Bulgakov.
  • Vintage and Soviet era items, such as posters, postcards, and badges.

Opening hours and payment

Large shopping centres generally have long opening hours and are often open every day. Smaller independent shops may have shorter or less predictable hours.
For everyday shopping, Yandex Maps are useful for finding shops, markets and opening hours.
As with restaurants and other businesses, international bank cards should not be relied upon.
If you are buying food, cosmetics or other products to take home, also check your destination country's customs restrictions before travelling.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Russia's major cities have active nightlife scenes, ranging from relaxed cocktail bars and pubs to nightclubs, live-music venues and late-night entertainment.
The atmosphere can vary considerably from one venue to another, so checking recent reviews and the venue's social media before going out can be useful.

Dress code and face control

Dress codes vary. Many bars have a relaxed atmosphere, while some clubs and more fashionable venues may expect smart-casual clothing.
Some Russian nightclubs operate face control — a door policy under which staff decide who is admitted. Entry is not necessarily guaranteed simply because you are over the legal age or have a ticket. Factors can include the venue's capacity, dress code, group composition, behaviour and the atmosphere the venue is trying to maintain.
If you want to visit a particular club, check its current entry policy and dress expectations before going.

FAQ

Do I need to book theatre and concert tickets in advance?
For popular performances and major venues, booking in advance is recommended. Less popular events may have tickets available closer to the date or at the venue.
Can I buy tickets if I do not speak Russian?
Often yes, particularly for opera, ballet, major venues and tourist attractions. However, some Russian-language websites and booking procedures can be difficult for international visitors. Check whether an English-language option is available before purchasing.
Do I need to book museums in advance?
Not always. Many museums accept walk-in visitors, but advance booking is advisable for major museums, temporary exhibitions and particularly busy periods.
Can I eat Russian food if I have never tried it before?
Absolutely. Russian cuisine includes many familiar ingredients and relatively approachable dishes. You can also explore regional cuisines from different parts of the country.
Is tipping expected in Russia?
Tipping is not compulsory, but it is common in restaurants when you are satisfied with the service. Around 10% is a reasonable general guideline.
Can I pay by foreign bank card?
Because of sanctions, international bank cards generally cannot be relied upon for everyday payments in Russia. Bring enough cash, or open a local bank account.
Do Russian restaurants have English menus?
Many restaurants in major tourist areas offer English menus, but this is not universal. Smaller or more local establishments may have menus only in Russian.
Do I need a guide to visit Russia's major attractions?
No. Many attractions can be visited independently. A guide can nevertheless be worthwhile if you want historical context, specialised knowledge or a more personalised experience.
Are Russian nightclubs difficult to enter?
It depends on the venue. Some clubs have relatively relaxed entry policies, while others use face control and may enforce dress codes or other entry requirements.
Can you help me arrange tickets, tours or other experiences?
Yes. We can provide assistance with selected travel arrangements and experiences, including theatre and concert tickets, guides, tours and remote travel support. Contact us with your plans and requirements, and we will let you know how we can help.
