ACCOMMODATION IN RUSSIA
A Complete Guide & Booking Tips
Booking a hotel in Russia isn't as straightforward as it used to be. This guide cuts through the complexity, helping you find and secure the right place to stay.
Booking.com and Airbnb no longer operate in Russia. While new platforms have emerged, they come with a major hurdle: paying for your reservation with a foreign Visa or Mastercard.
The good news is, you have several practical options, from navigating local booking sites to relying on on-the-ground assistance.

What You Should Know About Booking Accommodation in Russia
Foreign bank cards are not accepted
This is currently the main difficulty for international tourists visiting Russia. Even if a website appears accessible internationally, payment will fail during checkout.
Your passport and migration card are required for check in
As in most other countries, hotels and some apartment owners will ask you for your passport. They may also ask for a migration card. You will get it at the airplane or upon arrival before the border crossing. Make sure to keep it with you during your travel.
Registration is important in Russia
If you stay at a hotel, the hotel reception will register you automatically. If you stay at a private apartment for more than 7 business days, the landlord must register you with the local immigration department.
Apartments usually require prepayment
In Russia, short-term apartments are extremely common and often cheaper than hotels. However, most apartments require partial prepayment.
Most apartments are managed by private hosts
This means:
- communication may happen only in Russian and check-in instructions can be sent via Russian messengers,
- deposits may be cash-only,
- late-night arrivals sometimes require coordination.

Generally yes, it is a common and reliable method for foreign tourists. Many hotels offer a "pay on site" option, allowing you to pay in cash in rubles upon arrival. Alternatively, we can assist you with the online prepayment.
